First Graders Embark on Deserted Island Project Together

Buchanan-Verplanck first graders work together on a deserted island project.

Mrs. Strang, Mrs. Anderson and Ms. Sickles' first grade classes at Buchanan-Verplanck Elementary School have been busy working on Module 1 in the Into Reading program, learning how making new friends and learning new things can help us grow. To put these ideas into action, students took on a fun challenge — surviving together on a deserted island!

Each child became an expert in one important island job, such as Fire Wizard, Shelter Maker or Water Detective. Students drew pictures of their jobs, placed them on the island map where they made the most sense, and shared how their roles would help everyone work together and succeed.

This creative project allowed students an opportunity to practice reading, writing, listening and speaking, while also building teamwork and new friendships — just like real explorers learning to support one another!

“This activity will also serve as a culminating project that we will continue to build upon throughout the year,” Ms. Sickles said. “We will add new layers and connections as we explore future modules together.”
